Breed notes with kind permission of OUR DOGS

SPC

LKA wrapped up the 2025 Championship Show season. Stafford County Showground looked so festive and welcoming. A lot of planning and thoughtful touches made the show quite special—congratulations to the officers and committee. Poodles were judged in the Prestwood Hall, where the good-sized carpeted rings were a great addition. We also had plenty of room for grooming; if only all shows could be like this.

Standards were first in the ring and Lucy Williams was awarding CCs in the size for the first time. Her CC & BOB was Ch Sachemic Mischief Managed With Afterglow JW, handled by Jason Lynn, who co-owns with Becca Moores and Sam Speakman. She finished with Group 2nd. The Dog CC winner was Ch Sculbrook Raising The Odds JW, handled by Fiona Brook. He is co-owned with her mum Carol, and this was his 8th CC. Reserve Bitch CC was won by the white, Kamarri Let’s Go Barbie To Crystalar JW, owned by Linda, Fenella, and James Barker, with Linda handling. In dogs, Ch Niaveera See What Lies Ahead JW added another Reserve CC to his collection, shown by Steph Spoors and co-owned with Steph Wilson. Best Puppy in Breed was shown by Anna Skinner with Afterglow Altered Images, in co-ownership with Jason Lynn and Tom Isherwood. Barranca Piket and her brown boy Dandy-Lion’s Sno’Bodies Business took home the Best Special Beginner winner’s rosette.

At the conclusion of Standard judging, it was Linda Lee’s turn to award the CCs in Miniatures and Toys. Starting with Miniatures, her Dog CC and BOB winner was Ch Michandy It’s Showtime At Pupstar JW. What a year he and handler Suzanne Lee-Morris have had, finishing Runner-Up Top Utility—a very impressive achievement. In bitches, Minarets Counter Attack won her 2nd CC for owner Melanie Harwood. The Reserve CC winners were, in dogs, Ch Sculbrook It Had To Be A Miracle JW with Fiona Brook, while in bitches Ch Volgarus Candid Clara with Julia Wells took home the smaller green and white card. Kay Reeve-Kettle has been having a wonderful time with her homebred puppy Vadisima’s Guiding Promise, who placed 2nd in the Utility Puppy Group. Chris Lister and Calmaric One For The Money JW VW won another Best Veteran in Breed. Libby Church had a super day winning Best Special Beginner in Breed with Joleena Magnifique Pierre JW, who also won 2nd in the Special Beginners Group.

There was a short break to complete some paperwork due to an incident which had to be resolved before Linda could carry on to judge Toys. Her CC and BOB winner was Tom Isherwood and Jason Lynn’s Ch Dream High Kai Kennel Afterglow Adrenaline, imported from China and handled by Tom. The Dog CC was a first big green and white card for 13-month-old Nasailleen Talk To The Hand, handled by Lisa Nelson, who co-owns with Brenda Bryant. Lynne Land and Ch Sotto Voce Yes I Am At Stepanelle won the Reserve Dog CC, and in bitches Ch Afterglow Lil Black Dress, owned by Katie McGinn and Allison Alexander, was the Reserve CC winner. Best Puppy in Breed was my Vicmar Gaievals The Girl Is Mine. I won’t even say how many years it has been since I last campaigned a Toy, but it’s fun being back. Best Special Beginner was Afterglow Trifle Tipsy.

On Monday 15th December I attended the funeral of Ann Cambray Coppage. It would have delighted Cambray that some gorgeous Poodles were allowed to be part of the service. They met the hearse and two of Sara Bingham’s Parti Colours bowed to the coffin. Cambray’s final Poodle companion, Bussell, was also present with Cambray’s longtime friend Marie Muddiman, who has taken over caring for Bussell. It was a lovely service which Cambray’s family had put so much love and thought into organising. It was super to see a little film presentation of Cambray’s life—obviously Poodles dominated much of it! Cambray will be much missed by all who knew her. I will treasure the remarkable 10-generation pedigree for Bussell (whom I bred). It is framed and truly has to be seen to appreciate the many hours of work which went into it. I’ve also been entrusted with a model of Ch Vulcan Psyche Of Gayshaws, who is really rather beautiful.

As these are my final breed notes of 2025, I’d like to wish you all a very Happy New Year. Thank you to all who have sent news in over the year—it is always much appreciated. See you all in 2026, when we will be back doing it all again!

I was really sad to hear the news that Nicola Garbutt’s mam, Marie Gooderham, has passed away. Always a familiar face around the ring supporting Nicola, Marie had a remarkable memory for people and dogs, and we always had interesting chats. Marie took great pride in her family and all they achieved. Sending deepest condolences to Nicola and her family; Marie genuinely had a life well lived.

Chris Dainty has kindly sent me the funeral details for Mary Lowdell. The service will be held on 18th December at 12.30 at Charing Crematorium, TN27 0DB. Donations to The Cinnamon Trust, via Country Funerals (Ashford).

Some of you will be aware that Poodle Assist and Standard Poodle Club Rescue have been dealing with a simply dreadful case involving a large number of Toy and Standard Poodles. They really need our help, and Patricia Wheeler has sent me the following plea:

Poodle Assist is seeking exceptional foster or adoptive homes for a number of Standard Poodles who have had little to no experience of the outside world. Although aged between 18 months and 5 years, their emotional development is closer to that of puppies, as they have not received the socialisation or life experiences they should have had. All the dogs present as placid, gentle and eager to learn, but they will require patient, experienced handlers to guide them through the basics: house training, lead walking, and building confidence in everyday situations. For their wellbeing and safety, these Poodles cannot be placed in homes with young children. If you are an experienced Standard Poodle owner able to offer a calm, understanding environment and the time these dogs need to flourish, Poodle Assist would love to hear from you.”

At this time of year, instead of posting Christmas cards, I’ve decided to send a donation to Poodle Assist. They are a small rescue, and what they and SPC Rescue have been dealing with is pretty overwhelming. If you can help either Poodle Assist or SPC Rescue, or if you know anyone who can maybe take a dog as a foster or more permanently, please direct them to these two groups. Those poor dogs deserve to see 2026 in a far happier situation than the one in which they currently find themselves.

As is traditional, I’m going to use my breed notes to remind everyone to get your adverts for The Poodle Club 150th Anniversary Catalogue to me by 3rd January, and entries sent in with plenty of time, as there will be no extension to the online closing date. All details are on www.fossedata.co.uk

BUBA means the start of the Christmas Festivities. A lovely day in the Annex which was warm nearly all day which made a welcome change. There had been an accident nearby with diversions in place for those who travelled that way which meant there was a 20 minute delay in the start of judging. Miniatures & Toys were in one ring and in the adjacent ring Standards followed Chows and they had Geoff Corish judging both breeds.

Back to the Miniatures with Arturo Sheppard judging. It was the breed leader Suzanne & Andrew Lee-Morris’ Ch Michandy It’s Showtime at Pupstar JW who took another CC & BOB putting him a bit further in front for Top Poodle. Its all up for grabs at LKA. Fiona Brook’s Ch Sculbrook Had To Be A Miracle JW took home the Res CC. Winning the Bitch CC was Julia Wells’ Ch Volgarus Candid Clara. Charming the judge to win the Res CC (her 2nd) & Best Puppy was Kay Reeve-Kettle’s Vadisima’s Guiding Promise, she is still only 8½ months old. Her half brother, Libby Church’s Joleena Magnifique Pierre JW was Arturo’s choice for Best Special Beginners. Best Veteran was their uncle, my 8 year old Ch Navarre’s Extrovert JW.

David Watts took over the ring to judge Toys. He awarded another CC to Barbara Moss’ Ch Afterglow Kaptain Krunch at Carianjo JW, handled by daughter Rosie, who has had a bit of a rest. The Res Dog CC went to Angela Corish & Sarah Oldfield’s Tuttlebees Devils Dilemma. In bitches, yet another new one from the Afterglow stable came in the shape of Dream High Kai Kennel Afterglow Adrenaline in the capable hands of Tom Isherwood to win the Bitch CC & BOB. Angela Corish’s Tuttlebees Touch of Magic who is handled by Sarah Oldfield charmed her way to the Res CC. Sandra Godfrey’s Aedan Lord Of The Dance decided if his brother could win last week would take Best Puppy here. Afterglow Trifle Tipsy took another Best Special Beginners for her owners Ms Smith & Teasel. The evergreen Ir Ch Philora Silver Pudding who is 10 years old & owner Sandra Martin took another Best Veteran.

Geoff now finished the Chows carried on with Standards awarding a 5th CC to Steph Wilson & Steph Spoors’ Ch Niaveera See What Lies Ahead JW. The winner of the Bitch CC & BOB was Kamarri Smarty Pantts JW handled by owner Karen Patterson-Rogerson who was on Cloud 9. She is sired by ‘Eze’ who also sired the Best Puppy Brian Irving & Katie Foster’s Sarnia Takin It Eze. Philip Langdon won both Res CCs with the half siblings Atastar Written In Stone & Ch Atastar And Just Like That. Best Veteran went to Mandy Heslio’s Tianola Chasing Shadows. Naomi Dziobon’s Sterlingway Astralmighty was Geiff’s choice for Best Special Beginners.

When I looked up the results later I couldn’t find any Poodles placed in the Stakes classes, most unusual.

So to the Groups. The first one in was the Special Beginners Group which was judged by Mrs M Thompson. She gave Group 3 to the Miniature Joleena Magnifique Pierre JW.

Then in the BIS ring Tony Moran shortlisted the Miniature Ch Michandy Its Showtime at Pupstar JW. Next in the ring were the Puppies. He gave Res BPIS (Puppy Gp 2) to the Miniature Vadisima’s Guiding Promise. Finally came the Veteran & he awarded Group 3 to Ch Navarre’s Extrovert JW. What a fabulous day for my Ch Expertise. He is the sire of Magnifique Pierre & Guiding Promise & half brother to Extrovert. After a long day it certainly made the journey home that much sweeter.

Good luck to everyone going to LKA. I wont be there as my friend Linda Lee is judging and we don’t show under each other. Dont forget the judging order. Standards followed by Miniatures then Toys.

Online entries for Manchester close on 16th December. Also a reminder that postal entries close on 11th January for The Poodle Club’s 150th Anniversary Year Ch Show.

POODLE

Following my plea for news to include in the breed notes, it was lovely to hear from Geraldine Coates, who tells me that her 16‑month‑old white Standard girl, Angel – Afterglow Luminary With Angelsam – can now add JW to her name after winning her final Junior Warrant points at Midland Counties Canine Association. Congratulations to Geraldine and Angel on a wonderful achievement.

This week I heard the sad news from Chris Dainty that we have lost another stalwart of the breed. Mary Lowdell of Nejika Poodles died at the grand age of 92. For many years she was a familiar face in the Poodle rings, usually showing her brown Miniatures and Standards. Until very recently her final companion was Benji, a blue Standard bred by Chris. Sending condolences to Mary’s friends and family.

Eastern Counties PC held their Championship Show on 30th November at Werrington Leisure Centre. The venue looked super and the new ring divider posts were very swanky. In Standards, Carol Hutchins awarded the Bitch CC and BOB to Jason Lynn handling Ch Sachemic Mischief Managed With Afterglow JW, co‑owned with Sam Speakman and Becca Moores. The Res CC was Afterglow Kill For Candy, owned by Jason Lynn, with Mike handling. In Dogs, the CC went home with Ch Niaveera See What Lies Ahead JW, handled by Steph Spoors, who co‑owns with Steph Wilson. Tracy Brown and Ch Somanic Spectre For Jaspalie had a super day, winning Res DCC and Best Veteran in Breed. The Best Puppy in Breed winner was Renkiss And Make Up, owned by Jessica Dixon.

Lisa Nelson was giving CCs in Miniatures for the first time, and I’d think Emma Hunter will be flying home to Scotland having won her third CC with Silvora Cristal Star JW. Congratulations to Agnes Murphy, who co‑owns with Emma, on their new Champion. Res DCC was Ch Michandy It’s Showtime At Pupstar JW, handled as always by Suzanne Lee‑Morris. The Bitch CC and BOB was another for the collection of Ch Volgarus Candid Clara and owner Julia Wells. Res BCC was won by Ch Maldavale Fizztastic Von Amerina, who has had such a good year for her owner Trish Farndon. The Best Puppy in Breed winner was making her debut aged 6 months and 2 days: Starianna It’s All About Me And Donaska, owned by Fiona Bruce. Best Veteran in Breed was another rosette for Calmaric One For The Money JW VW, shown by Chris Lister. Baby Puppy classes are such a nice way to introduce young ones to the ring. Best Baby Puppy was Minamia Destiny’s Promise At Laderams, owned by Debbie Bird.

In Toys, Valerie Walker was making the decisions. Her Bitch CC and BOB was Can Ch Afterglow Lil Black Dress, who can now add her UK title. She was shown by Tom Isherwood, who co‑owns her with Alison Alexander and Katie McGinn. Angela Corish won the Res BCC with Tuttlebees Touch Of Magic. In Dogs, Lynne Land showed Ch Sotto Voce Yes I Am At Stephanelle to another CC. Sandra Godfrey’s new boy Aedan Lord Of The Dance was Best Puppy in Breed and Res CC. Best Baby Puppy was Marion Marston’s Seldoop High Five.

The Best in Show awards were judged by Leticia Tranter, who chose the Standard Bitch for BIS, the Miniature Bitch for Res BIS, Best Puppy in Show was the Toy, and Best Veteran in Show the white Standard. I looked at my watch when leaving the show after completion of judging and thought it must have stopped, but no – I was actually sitting in my car at 2.15 pm, which meant I got home before it got dark. Congratulations to the hardworking committee for a well‑run show.

Suzanne Lee‑Morris, who does a sterling job as Secretary of The Miniature Poodle Club, has given me the information about the Miniature Poodle Club Review 2025. They are the only Poodle breed club who publish a review, which offers the chance to advertise and celebrate your dogs. Contact Suzanne for costs and to book an advert, and also send the details for inclusion in 2025 Champions, Junior Warrant, Show Certificate of Excellence, and Veteran Award winners. Suzanne’s email is suzannemorris802@gmail.com. The Miniature exhibitors are fortunate to have the chance to record for history their dogs’ achievements. I very much regret that The Poodle Council no longer produce their yearbook, which was always invaluable for breed research.

Details are now available for the next Poodle Breed Appreciation Day with MCE, offering the opportunity for Group Mentoring. It is being held on 22nd February 2026 at The Christie Hall, Elton Road, Wansford, Peterborough PE8 6JS. The Group Mentors are Kim Sillito‑Beale, Andrew Hoblin, and Jackie Kitchener – three hugely respected and successful breed specialists. The BAD is being jointly held by Miniature PC and Eastern Counties PC. All enquiries should be made to Sarah Oldfield at saraholdfield50@gmail.com.

The entry details have now been published for the two final Championship Shows of 2025. Both shows are at Stafford County Showground. On Saturday 6th December it is British Utility Breeds Association, where Arturo Sheppard is judging 49/61 Miniatures, Geoff Corish has 55/72 Standards, and David Watts awards CCs for the first time in Toys 43/55. Poodles are judged in Annexe 1. In Ring 12 the judging order is Miniatures followed by Toys. In Ring 13 Standards are second in the ring following Chow Chows. A week later, on Saturday 13th December, it is LKA, where Miniatures 41/42 and Toys 45/53 are judged by Linda Lee, and for Standards 55/60 Lucy Williams awards CCs in the size for the first time.

POODLE

This week I received the news that we had lost Ann Cambray Coppage, however you knew her, it could be Ann Cambray or perhaps a reverent Miss Coppage! A full obituary will be in this edition of Our Dogs. Cambray was Poodle history and our world has lost a great ambassador. She was ‘old school’, she studied pedigrees, for a hobby she would research and write out a 10 generation circular pedigree. Cambray had been brought up that structure and breed type mattered more than the present day frills and hairdressing, you had to understand the basics and what a Poodle was bred to do. Never for her was the perfect topknot the most important thing about the dog. I’ll miss her knowledge, humour, honesty and friendship. I hope she is now reunited with all her much loved Poodles who went before.

Eastern Counties Poodle Club Championship Show is on 30th November at it’s usual home Werrington Leisure Centre, Staniland Way, Werrington, Peterborough, PE4 6NA, the entries are Mins - 39 dogs / 44 entries, Stds - 35 dogs/48 entries, Toys - 29 dogs/ 35 entries. Safe journey for all who are travelling.

POODLE

Recently I had a lovely phone call with Ann Cambray Coppage, who told me she has moved into a care home where she can be closer to her family. Cambray said she is being very well looked after and enjoys getting a weekly fix of dog news by reading her weekly copy of Our Dogs. In her room she is surrounded by her most treasured Poodle mementos and the splendid Pink Poodle Lamp which I remember she was overjoyed to track down and buy for herself a couple of years ago. Cambray is such a great letter writer and I often send her a copy of a photo I’ve found to see if she can help me identify a dog. The latest was a Beechover Standard owned by Rachel Gregory in the 1960’s, (please anyone with photos put your dogs name on the back!) Cambray’s new address is Sherrell House, 414 Fencepiece Road, Chigwell, Essex IG7 5DP.

Thanks to my fellow breed note writer Liz for reporting all the recent show results. This time of year used to be a lot busier with breed club shows, but since all the club amalgamations we have empty spaces in our diaries.

I had a look on Fosse and saw that we have schedules available for our last Breed Club show of 2025, Eastern Counties PC and online entries closing soon on 12th November, with CCs for all three sizes, judges are Carol Hutchins (Standards), Lisa Nelson (Miniatures), Val Walker (Toys) and Leticia Tranter will judge BIS.

2026 looks to be the year of the anniversary show - The Poodle Club celebrating 150 years on 25th January. We have three overseas judges making their debut Lorena Merati (Standards), Jakub Kruczek (Miniatures), Adam Ostrowski (Toys), BIS is judged by Kim Sillito-Beale. As this is my club I’ll make a shameless plug. We are having a commemorative catalogue where you can advertise for the very reasonable cost of £10 per page, further details from me. We have also been gathering class rosette sponsorship for £5, there are still a few Toy and Miniature classes available. I’ll be at ECPC if anyone would like to support a class (or two!)

On Sunday 15th February the Midland Counties PC will be holding their 70th Anniversary Show. Judges are Sandra Dennison (Standards), Ann Bradley (Miniatures), Linda Brown (Toys) and Andrew Hoblin judging BIS.

Moving on to Sunday 12th April it will be Trent To Tweed PC Ch Show. They have CCs for Standards - Jackie Kitchener and Toys-Phil Freer, no CCs for Miniatures, Cathryn Gleave, Lynne Land will be judging BIS. All schedules and further information can be found online at www.fossedata,co.uk

POODLE

I begin the notes with the sad news that Pam Gregory of Snowstar Poodles has died at the grand age of 97.  Pam made up several Champions,  including the black Miniature dog Ch Snowstar Charles but was perhaps better known for her Toys making up Ch Snowstar Ray,  who was a beautiful silver dog, Ch Snowstar Sarachi a white Toy bitch and Ch Snowstar Spencer a lovely  black dog who was also a popular sire. She had two white Toy Dogs who I really had a soft spot for, Snowstar Johnny and his son Snowstar Jocelyn, we had a super litter by him and regret losing those lines, in the days when Pam was active showing and breeding the quality across the colours was so good but over the following years some valuable bloodlines have been lost to the genepool.  When Pam retired from showing she moved to Somerset where she supported her daughter Jane in her equestrian career.  Sending condolences to Jane and all Pams friends & family.

Winning the final point for a Junior Warrant is always a great sense of achievement,  we tend to drive a ridiculous number of miles in the hope there will be enough dogs present in your class if you are fortunate enough to win, so big congratulations to Angela Walker and her Miniature boy, Raennes Black Velvet,  who after winning at Portsmouth Open Show can now add JW to his name.  Also at the same show I was showing my just 7 month black Toy,  Vicmar The Girl Is Mine, who won the Puppy Utility Group, it’s been many years since I showed a Toy,  indeed it will probably be a surprise to many that I started with the smallest size and they will always be very close to my heart.

The latest KC Breed Record Supplement shows that when comparing  registration numbers for the same time in 2024 with the same period in 2025 Miniature registrations are down with the 2nd quarter numbers of 301 compared to 375 from same time in 2024, the drop in Standard numbers are even more drastic currently 156 in comparison with 262 last year and Toys whose numbers have been quite resilient saw 399 registered a drop from 502 last year.  As now seems the norm, its hard to recognise a lot of the affixes and breeding across the sizes,  there seems to be an overwhelming number of Reds being registered plus of course the NBS colours. It is a worry as if registration numbers are dropping we will see less entries at our shows . Although I tend to avoid looking at it,  a glance at Pets 4 Homes website shows a number of litters for sale who are not KC Registered and prices are probably still more than what I (and many others) charged for puppies from Champion parents who were fully health tested…Answers on a postcard (or email) with suggestions  how we turn this round and educate ‘Joe Public’.

There are three breed club championship show schedules currently open for entries on Fosse Data, Eastern Counties PC on 30th November and if you want to think about 2026 The Poodle Clubs 150th Anniversary Show is on 25th January and Midland Counties PC is on 15th February. Now more than ever it’s time to support your breed clubs.

Sept 2025

ISSUE 19th Sept 25

Cast your minds back to Darlington 2023. In the Miniature Poodle ring Kay Reeve-Kettle was winning her 1st CC with her future 1st ever champion Ch  Kimedee Hot Love at Vadisima JW. Roll forward 2 years to this last weekend’s Darlington where Kay handled “Freya’s” daughter Vadisima’s Guiding Promise. At 6 months & 1 day old she won Best Puppy & the Res CC under Lee Cox & Utility Puppy Group 1. The Puppy Group was judged by Jacqui Ward. Kay’s face was a picture! It certainly was a day she will never forget.

Lee awarded the Dog CC & BOB, #32 to Suzanne & Andrew Lee-Morris’ Ch Michandy It’s Showtime at Pupstar JW.  The Res CC went to Fiona Bruce’s Am Ch Piedmont’s James Bond with Donaska. Julia Wells’ Ch Volgarus Candid Clara won another Bitch CC.

Lee gave Best Veteran to my Ch Navarre’s Extrovert JW & later in the day he was also judging the Veteran Group where we gained Group 4.

Diane Smith was the judge for Standards & Toys. Her Std Dog CC winner was no stranger to winning CCs but it was his 1st cut down in a short clip with shaved ears & tail. Nothing to hide! Ch Magin The Great Escape was handled beautifully  by Keith Mullan for Margaret Kendall. This was Keith’s 1st CC. Marita Rodgers’ Montravia Day Dream Believa gained the Res CC & Best Veteran. Diane gave the Bitch CC & BOB to Sam Speakman, Becca Moores & Jason Lynn’s Ch Sachemic Mischief Managed with Afterglow JW. Julia Wells’ Ch Volgarus Consider the Lily won another Res CC. Jason also won Best Puppy with Afterglow Kill For Candy.

In Toys Stacey White’s Ch Starianna Wreckit Ralph had a day out & won another Dog CC. Angela Corish & Sarah Oldfield’s Tuttlebees Devils Dilemma added another Res CC to his record. Tracey James & Tom Isherwood’s Ch Afterglow Karaoke JW was the winner of the Bitch CC & BOB.  Ive lost track of how many CCs this little bombshell has now won. Arturo Sheppard’s Ch  Mikasa Magicstar Small Talk JW was given the Res CC. Ron McAuley brought his Puppy out, by the name of Anorien Stole The Show for Byron he was Best Puppy in Breed. There were no Veterans.

There were no Utility Group placings for poodles this year, thought the 2 Miniatures (niece & uncle) certainly held their own in the Puppy & Veteran Groups.

POODLE

We begin these notes with the very sad news that Carole Flatt has died, Carole bred and showed the most beautifully coloured Brown Standards, her Tragapanz affix was famous worldwide and formed the cornerstone of many breeding programs for those who were dedicated to the colour. Very recently I met a family who were collecting their 5th Standard Poodle and they naturally talked about their previous dogs, the first two Standards were from Carole and these lovely dogs cemented their lifelong love of the breed. Over the years I’ve heard many similar stories from puppy buyers. Although Carole concentrated on her browns and title holders included Ch Josato Capability Brown Of Tragapanz, Ch Tragapanz Bychance Eroica and Ch Tragapanz Petrachellie, my own favorite was her glamorous white boy Ch Kimanjoes Double Diamond Of Tragapanz, in fact if plans had worked out he would have been the sire of my first ever litter of Standards, however Zara had different ideas and sadly failed to concieve. Carole and her husband Trevor were trailblazers in revolutionising the equipment we used in the grooming industry, their company Dezynadog, introduced powerful Stand Dryers, Drying Cabinets, all manner of labour saving devices were found and marketed. They had a brilliant range of shampoos and sprays which saved time, improved coat condition and made us look beyond merely having dogs with clean hair but introduced the science of what could be used to benefit the different canine hair types. So many of today’s groomers owe their foundation to the grooming school opened in Kings Lynn where Carole taught in depth grooming methods, I can remember being at a demo where she showed how to scissor a lamb trim topknot, tips I learned that day I still use when grooming. When Trevor and Carole decided to retire they handed the baton to their daughter Mandy Carr, who carries on their ethics with her company The Scissor Boutique. I send condolences to Mandy, her husband Mike and all who loved Carole.

During the week I received an email from Anne Crocker with some lovely news of wins she had with her two standard girls, Lotringham Tenacity won Best Of Breed, Utility Group 1st and Best In Show at Newton Abbot and South Devon C S Open Show, not to be outdone Tenacity’s dam Twoofus Love Is In The Air at Lotringham also won the Utility Veteran Group, as Anne says, we only show lightly so this was our best day ever. Congratulations and thank you for letting me know your news.

Richmond Championship Show is held in the grounds of Loseley Park, just outside of Guildford. It is my most local show and in the days leading up to the show I was well aware of the torrential rain we had been encountering and had vivid memories of last years show where we were sloshing around in waterlogged rings. This year the rain clouds dispersed and on Utility day were were blessed with blue skies, a pleasant breeze and sunshine. Miniatures were first in the ring at 9am, where Linda Barker had drawn a super entry, it proved to be another outstanding day for Suzanne and Andrew Lee-Morris’s Ch Michandy It’s Showtime At Pupstar JW, handled as always by Suzanne they won their 31st CC & BOB, the day got even more exciting when Suzanne and Gio topped the Utility Group under respected All Rounder Gavin Robertson, in bitches it was Trish Farndon and Ch Maldavale Fizztastic Von Amerina who was winning her 6th CC. The Reserve CC winners were in dogs Ch Sculbrook Had To Be A Miracle JW, owned and shown by Fee Brook, in bitches it was a 5th RCC for Jackie Kitcheners junior girl, Michandy Time After Time JW, a daughter of the BOB winner so another super day for the Michandy team. Kirsty Youngs new baby, Chesterhill Burning Love For Anorien was Best Puppy In Breed and Susan Clarke won Best Special Beginner In Breed with her homebred Sumania Opal, they also had a lovely win later when finishing 2nd in the Utility Special Beginners Group. As Miniature judging completed it was the turn of the Standards who were judged by respected All Rounder Ernie Paterson, I’ll be honest I had a really, really wonderful day with Vicmar’s Press Play, who won her 3rd consecutive CC&BOB, making her my 32nd Champion, our lovely day didn’t end there as she was also Utility Group 4th, Dolly is co owned with Stella Harris and is a 3rd Champion for her sire Ch Huffish Rewrite The Stars With Atastar. Rachel Downes had a day she will always treasure when she and her white boy Royaldeniz Superwolverine JW, won Limit dog and then their first ever CC, it was lovely to see a newer exhibitor moving up to the next level. The Reserve CC winners were in Dogs Philip Langdon and Atastar Written In Stone, who now has 2 CC’s 4 Rcc’s.In bitches the Res CC was Ch Sachemic Mischief Managed With Afterglow, shown by Jason Lynn and co owned with Becca Moores and Sam Speakman. Best Puppy In Breed and later Puppy Group 2nd was Jasenak Secret Is Safe At Sarnia, owned by Sarah O’Higgins. Best Veteran was Lester Bedwells Vicmars Smart Fella, shown by Vicki Mitchell and Best Special Beginner In Breed was Jessica Smiths Silver puppy, Dolcevaquero Very Irresistible Givenchy. It was lovely to hear applause from the ringside it really lifts the atmosphere. Toys were third in the ring and were judged by Tony Allcock, who found his CC&BOB winner in open bitch, Can Ch Afterglow Lil Black Dress is stopping off for a little time with her breeders the Afterglow team after picking up some nice wins at the WDS in Helsinki, this was her 2nd CC having won her 1st CC at Birmingham, she was handled by Tom Isherwood who co owns her with Allison Alexander and Katie McGinn. The Dog CC winner was Ch Nasailleen Herr Flick with the ResCC his team mate NasailleenTalk To The Hand, who was also Best Puppy In Breed and Puppy Group 4th, the team weren’t finished as they also collected the Res BCC with Ch Nasailleen Bets Are Off, quite a day for Lisa Nelson and Leanne Moss.Winning Best Veteran In Breed was Dikatanya Devoted Dana owned by Dinara Pettyaeva and Clopton Diamond Jubilee At Portloe won another Best Special Beginner In Breed for her owner Joyce Gilbert.

After the absolute disaster that befell Driffield Ch Show last year,  thankfully the weather gods smiled down on them as they ran 2 General Championship Shows. Many congratulations to secretary Mike Lancashire & his band of merry men who tried their absolute best to keep the shows running as well as possible. Obviously each day was going to be long (as has been proved by SKC’s running of double shows) but each day some judges were slower than others & had to be rallied along.

Poodles were on the 3rd day & overall we had lovely weather, almost too warm at times yet there were still calls going out for dogs left in cars!! Why?

Sadly Miniatures were the only size with CCs available & at both shows. Standards & Toys had none CC classes at the 2025 show but at the 49th show, which was the replacement for last years show, only had classes for CC breeds.

Vanessa Williams-Wegmann was awarding her first set of Poodle CCs. Kirsty Young (Hunt) has a very mixed emotional day with her boy as she discovered that she couldn’t handling him because of the pain from her gallstones. Luckily Hannah Roulston, who has handled Jaxx before, managed to get over in time to get to show him. To their delight Chesterhill Oceans Orca at Anorien JW won the Dog CC & BOB, his 3rd & title. He won his 1st CC at Paignton last year under Louise Cunningham & his 2nd came from Marlene Carter at Northumbria PC in July. Bred by Matthew Davidson & Craig Johnstone he is sired by Volgarus We Can Do It ex Chesterhill Sissy That Walk. The Res CC winner was Ann & Keith Ling’s Arrowflight Beau At The Ball handled as usual by his breeder Helen Lunnun-Turner. The Bitch CC was another to add to our collection as I won it with Ch Joleena’s In Excelsis with Navarre JW. Melanie Harwood’s Minarets Counter Attack took the Res CC. Best Puppy in Breed, her 3rd, was Lena & Leonora Tate’s Tatalena Rock N’Rock Star. I also won Best Veteran with Lewis aka Ch Navarre’s Extrovert JW. Sadly we missed the Veteran Group as I was in the ring with Dior at the 2nd show. Best Special Beginner was Libby Church’s Joleena Magnifique Pierre

In the Toy ring Bridgette Bodle awarded Best Dog to Steve & Lynne Land’s Stepanelle One For The Road & they also got Best Bitch with his mother Ch Stepanelle’s Girls Loud. It was she who got BOB. Res Best Dog was Angela Thompson’s Afterglow Show Us Yer Nuts Trandella JW whilst Res Best Bitch & Best Puppy was Melissa Smith & Teasel’s Afterglow Trifle Tipsy

Barry Blunden judged the Standards. His choice for Best Dog & BOB was Steph Wilson & Steph Hall’s Ch Niaveera See What Lies Ahead. Res Best Dog, Best Veteran & Veteran Gp 3 was Mandy Heslop’s Tianola Chasing Shadows. He was handled by Young Amelia Richardson. Best Bitch was Becca Moores, Sam Speakman & Jason Lynn’s Ch Sachemic Mischief Managed with Afterglow JW. Malcolm Fozard & Kim Nicholls’ Sympika Heatwave. Best Puppy was Jessica Dixon’s Rennkiss And Make Up.

At the 2nd show (49th) Standards & Toys were in the AV Utility NSC classes. Best Veteran was the afore mentioned Std Tianola Chasing Shadows & to everyone concerned’s delight he won the Utility Veteran Group. Best Bitch NSC was the Std Ch Sacjemic Mischief Managed with Afterglow JW.

Michele James, the judge for Miniatures, awarded the Dog CC, his 1st,  to the Ling’s Arrowflght Beau At The Ball again handled by Helen. Suzanne & Andrew Lee-Morris’ Ch Michandy It’s Showtime at Pupstar JW colleted the Res CC. In bitches, I had a sort of double as I won the Bitch CC & BOB with Ch Joleena’s In Excelsis with Navarre JW. A delighted & very busy Yvette Dumont won the Res Bitch CC with Raeanna Mai Tai for Sirensong & Best Puppy with Arrowflight Luck Be A Lady with Sirensong who she co-owns with Helen. After a break it was time to go into the Utility Group where there was a change of judge & Bill Browne-Cole, to my delight awarded Dior Utility Group 4.

By the time I had thrown stuff in the car & driven up the hill to the caravan it was nearly 8.45pm - a looong day. The good thing was that I could keep popping back to let my other dogs out to stretch their legs.

By the time Yvette had been in the Puppy Group its my guess that it must have been around midnight when she got home! The Standard had to do it all again on Bank Holiday Monday & Best Veteran in Show, judged by Richard Bott, was the very last competition at the show(s) which was late. Luckily the Committee had invested in lights in the BIS ring which made it nice & light in there each evening. So “Tom” the Standard & his helpers must have been late home

At Norfolk & Norwich Open Show Angela Walker’s Raeannes Black Velvet won BOB under Jane Eyeington, then headed the group under Marion Hodgson & finally went BIS which was awarded by Penny Sands. Steve & Julie Warnes’ Myhaven Lucky Fancy won Best Puppy in Breed.  Congratulations to you all.

The City of Birmingham Ch Show at Stoneleigh was also the venue for Midland Counties PC Open Show. The Club judge was Julia Wells. She had drawn a good entry. In Miniatures Best Dog & BOB was Kirsty Young’s Ch Chesterhill Oceans Orca at Anorien JW. Yvette Dumont’s Raeannes Mai Tai for Sirensong JW was Best Bitch. Best Puppy was Lena & Leonora Tate’s Tatalena Rock N’Roll Star.

Next in were the Toys where Best Dog & Best Puppy in Breed was David & Brenda Watts’ new youngster Micador The Dark Destroyer. Best Bitch, BOB & Res BIS went to Arturo Sheppard’s Ch Mikasa Magicstar Small Talk JW.

Finally in Standard’s Best Dog, BOB & BIS was Rachel Downes’ Royaldeniz Superwolverine JW, Andrew Hoblin & Sandra Dennison’s Kertellas Diamond Sky at Labamba JW was awarded Best Bitch. Best Puppy & Best Puppy In Show was the Standard Bitch Janavons Star Of The Sea who is co-owned  by Eileen Geeson & Mary Nugent.

Meanwhile in the adjacent ring Dr Donald Sturz  was judging Standard Poodles in the UK for the first time. He gave the Dog CC, his 2nd, to Philip Langdon’s Atastar Written In Stone whilst the 2 Steph’s (Wilson & Hall) took home another Res CC with Ch Niaveera See What Lies Ahead JW. Once again Aster, Ch Sachemic Mischief Managed with Afterglow came to the fore & won the Bitch CC & BOB. The Res Bitch CC & Best Puppy winner was Janice & Kelvyn Harwood’s white baby Atastar Final Call for Alusio.

In the Group ring where the judge was Andreas Schemel it was the Standard Mischief Managed who reigned again taking Group 1. In the Junior Group, judged by Tom Mather, Group 3 was Linda, Fenella & James Barker’s Kamarri Let’s Go Barbie to Crystalar.  Veteran Group 3 went to Marita Rodgers’ Montravia Day Dream Believa.

Toys followed. The Dog CC was another for Ch Afterglow Kaptain Krunch at Cariango JW who is co-owned by Barbara Moss & her daughter Rosie who prepares & handles him. Lynne & Steve Land’s Stepanelle One For The Road won his 1st Res CC. Winning her 1st CC & BOB was Tom Isherwood, Allison Alexander & Katie McGinn’s Can Ch Afterglow Lil Black Dress. Angela Corish’s youngster Tuttlebees Touch Of Magic added another Res CC. Winning another Best Puppy was Lisa Nelson & Leanne Moss’ Nasailleen Talk To The Hand. My trip to Helsinki for WDS was absolutely wonderful, I was blessed with a terrific entry of Miniatures where my BOB in Blacks/whites/Brown,  was the junior bitch.  Bebella’s Queen Of Perfect Dream.  I was over the moon when Toshi Omura later awarded her BIS. In Apricot/Red/Greys BOB was a super Apricot male, Orange Jam Iz Volzhskoy Serenady, I also had the ‘other colours’ to judge, the quality here couldn’t match the solids. There was a lot of judges from the UK and also a fair few familiar faces had made the epic journey to compete, coming out on top in Standards at WDS was Jason and Aster, an exciting time for her co owners Becca and Sam, the Standard judge was Toshi Omura, they later topped Group 9 which was judged by Ilaria Biondi De Ciabatti.

Bournemouth Ch Show saw Poodles judged on Monday 11th August, which always means I’ll spend the rest of the week trying to figure out what day it is! It was lovely to be back at Brockenhurst, I’ve many happy memories of shows at this venue. Our judge for Standards and Miniatures was Patrick Holbourn, in  Standards it was a first CC plus BOB  for Vicmar’s Press Play, she also has 4 Res CC’s in her collection, she was later short listed in the Utility Group, Dolly was handled by me and is co owned by Stella Harris. It was wonderful to see Fenella Barker handle Montego Am I Kenough For Cystalar JW, to his 3rd CC in a row , he is co-owned with Mum Linda and brother James, bred by Clare Parker and Karen Winwood, so lots of very happy people celebrating the new Champion, Linda also showed Kamarri Let’s Go Barbie to Crystalar JW to the ResBCC.

In dogs, Philip Langdon and Atastar Written In Stone won his 3rd Res DCC to add to his CC. Best Puppy In Breed was Sarah O’Higgins white boy, Jasenak Secret is Safe At Sarnia. Silvora Cristal Star JW won his 4th Res CC to add to his 2 CC’s, he is knocking on the door for his title, Emma Hunter was handling and he is co owned by Agnes Murphy. In bitches Ch Volgarus Candid Clara  made a return to the ring to win the Bitch CC for Julia Wells, Jackie Kitcheners Michandy Time After Time JW celebrated her final show as a puppy, winning Best Puppy In Breed, her 11th such award and her 3rd ResCC. Amanda Nash had a superb day with her homebred Antiquarius Gabriel JW, winning not only Best Special Beginner In Breed but also topping the Utility Special Beginners Group. Toys had no CCs and were judged by Barry Blunden, Patricia Wheeler won BOB and Best Puppy In Breed with her white boy Verismo The Great Caruso, his litter sister Verismo Dame Kiri Not Callas was ResBest Bitch. Joyce Gilbert won Best Bitch and Best Special Beginner with her silver Clopton Diamond Jubilee At Portloe.

On Sunday 17th August, the picturesque if at times winding roads lead to Builth Wells for Welsh KC Ch Show, I think it’s safe to say Suzanne Lee-Morris will treasure her day at Welsh Kennel Club forever, not only did Ch Michandy It’s Showtime At Pupstar JW, win his 30th CC&BOB, awarded by Tom Mather, they then won the very competitive Utility Group and finished the day winning overall BIS from David Shields, it is wonderful that Jackie Kitchener was at the ringside watching proudly on, as if the day couldn’t be any better she won a 4th Res CC with Michandy Time After Time JW who at just over 12 months is another knocking loudly at that door. Winning the Res DCC it was Fiona Bruce and Am Ch Piedmont’s James Bond With Donaska, Donna Sarson was over the moon to not only win a 2nd CC with Arrowflight High Society At Dongara, she also showed her puppy, Arrowflight Tres Beau to Best Puppy In Breed. Amanda Nash, was again Best Special Beginner in Breed with Antiquarius Gabriel JW, they placed 2nd in Special Beginners Utility Group.

Kat Watkins young brown girl Montana Fight For The Right added a ResCC to her collection, she is co owned by mum Nicola. Winning Best Veteran it was Ir Ch Philora Silver Pudding owned by Sandra Martin. Other news from WKC was the news of Mergan Slack winning YKC handling and 3rd in the YKC stakes class, with Darcie -Kamarri Born To Be Wild at Achara, they also won their breed veteran class. Well done Megan.

The next show in the caledar is Driffield, Liz will be reporting on the show. Good luck and safe travels to all making the journey.

issue: 01/08/2025

Poor Sharon Pine-Haynes has been hit by Covid once again. She was hoping that she would test clear by the time Leeds came round but sadly no.

So to the show. It would be a very busy day as we had the Northumbria & Mercia PC Ch Show with CCs for all 3 sizes as well as Leeds, again with 3 sets of CCs. So with 3 sizes, 6 judges & 2 rings the rotation worked really well. In the Leeds ring it was Standards, Miniatures & Toy whilst in the other it was Mins, Toys & Stds.

I will give you the Leeds results first.

In Miniatures they were officiated by Karen Laws. Her Dog CC & BOB winner Silvora Cristal Star JW was a 1st ever CC won by Emma Hunter though his co owner Agnes Murphy has several Champions to her name.  I bet Emma floated home as they gained Group 2 under Geoff Corish. Well hasnt the weather changed! From glorious sunshine 2 weeks ago to torrential rain up & down the country this weekend! I must confess that on saturday  I chickened out of a day at Pollard Open sat in my small tent with no wet weather accommodation, opting for a comfy sofa & 4 dry dogs. Poor Jo Tofts went & she was soaked to the skin. But she got a JW Point with her boy Poornima Im On My Way & he was BOB & Puppy Group 4. Angela Thompsons Afterglow Show Us Yer Nuts Trandella JW was BOB Toy  The Utility Breeds judge was Caroline Friend-Rees.There were photos of a very wet Jo on Facebook. Tracey James judged in the North East & every dog was soaked. I believe Kirsty Hunt had a good day BOB in Toys & Mins. At City of Cambridge Open it looked as though the weather was kind. BOB & BP in Standards was Sarah OHiggins Jasenak Secret Is Safe at Sarnia judged by Aleks Wasowska & he went on to wing Group 2 & Puppy Group 1 under Josh Henderson.

On Sunday it was Trent to Tweed PC BAD Day & Open Show. We were in a new Venue, the Newstead Centre which is north of Nottingham. We thought it was a very good venue with plenty of room for grooming & a good sized ring, easy access from the car park & a lovely lounge area which was used for the Breed Presentation by Jackie Kitchener & 2 of her Miniature bitches followed by the BAD Exam.

The judge for the Open Show was Dana Grant (Silvora) Unfortunatey the lovely entry was decimated by absentees. In Mins her Best Dog was Jo Tofts Poornima Im On My Way (both looking spruced up again) Best Bitch & Best Puppy went to Jackie Kitcheners Michandy Time After Time.
